Vegas on the Cheap

Go to Vegas for $111 round-trip or stay home and dote on the new puppy you rescued.

Vegas, Baby: Celebrate the end of the school year with a trip to Vegas.  Allegiant Air, operating out of Long Beach, has prices too good to be true.  A round-trip flight leaving Friday evening, June 17, and returning Sunday evening, June 19, is only $111.  A comparable flight on Jet Blue is $214.

The price is so cheap, you could take the kids. Better yet, you have the money for a sitter.  But be forewarned: Allegiant Air is a discount airline.  It charges for everything: checked bags, reserved seating, soda and even buying your ticket online.  Go to the desk at Long Beach Airport and save the $17 Internet booking fee.  I recently flew on Allegiant Air, and the experience was good, considering the money I saved. Visit its website at allegiantair.com/

Pets: Get your next pet from a shelter. We got an 8-week-old mixed breed, adorable puppy for $125 from the Long Beach Society for the Prevention of  Cruelty to Animals on Spring Street.   It also has cats for $105 and bunnies are $50.  These fees include spay/neuter surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip (registration is $18), a health examination by the SPCA L.A. medical staff, and a certificate for free health examination by participating VCA Animal Hospital and a leash or cat carrier.  Best of all,  you give a homeless animal a home.  Long Beach SPCA is open Wednesday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Come early on Wednesday for the pick of the litter.  Visit the website at spcala.com/. Seal Beach also has animals for adoption at the Seal Beach Animal Care Center. Read more at sbacc.org/

Animal Care:  Now that you have your pet, you’re going to want to keep it healthy without breaking the bank.  Try Brookhaven Animal Clinic in Garden Grove.  It offers reasonable animal care without high prices.  An exam is just $25.  I took our dog there because it had horrible allergies.  I was paying $60 a month for medicine at another veterinary clinic.  Now, our dog eats a different food that I can buy at Sprouts and occasionally takes an over-the-counter Benedryl on Brookhaven's dosage guidance.
