Rally Planned for Bubba the Pig at Seal Beach Pier

Seal Beach's new pig ban prompts a rally to support Bubba, the city's only resident pig.

Community members will gather at the Seal Beach Pier Saturday for a rally supporting Seal Beach's now infamous pig Bubba, who is under fire following a new city ordinance banning pigs.

During the rally, Bubba's supporters hope to get their message across that the new ordinance is overreaching and bad for Seal Beach, according to organizer Shelley Littleton.

"At best, we want pot bellied pigs to be legal in Seal Beach," Littleton told Patch in an email. "At a minimum, we want Bubba to be grandfathered in to the ordinance so he can stay with his family who loves him and continue to be a therapy animal to [owner] Madonna who is fighting Stage 4 cancer."

Littleton said that both Bubba himself and owner Madonna Grimsley will attend the rally. Community members will speak at the event and Grimsley will tell Bubba's story, according to Littleton.

In addition, rally organizers hope to get the word out that the Seal Beach City Council will make its final vote on the ordinance at its Nov. 12 meeting.

"We are asking supporters to bring signs to show their love for Bubba and to come prepared to speak at the Council meeting and express their concern over this overreaching ordinance," Littleton said. "We are confident that when the Council listens to our reasoning they will agree that including pot bellied pigs in a livestock ordinance is unnecessary and in this case extremely cruel to the family and community who love Bubba.

Saturday's "Save Bubba" rally begins at 2 p.m. at the Seal Beach Pier. Littleton encouraged supporters to bring signs showing their support for Bubba.
