Monica Luhar graduated from the University of California, Irvine in 2011 with a B.A. in Literary Journalism. Her love for writing began at the age of 7 when she created a magazine entitled, Girls’ Life. From then on, she experimented with different forms of writing hoping to leave a lasting imprint in the world. Her grandfather and parents constantly encouraged her by holding weekly Scrabble tournaments and round-table book reads. When her grandfather passed away during her freshman year in college, she knew it was her duty to keep writing and keep his love of words alive.

In college, she worked her way up from staff writer, copy editor, and finally, Features Editor for UC Irvine’s official campus newspaper, New University. During her last quarter at UC Irvine, she interned at OC Weekly and published 23 articles on various topics such as news, arts/culture and entertainment. During her time at OC Weekly, Monica interviewed parents who lost their family members to violence, college students that participated in undie runs, and Holocaust survivors. Monica keeps herself busy; she is currently freelancing for Suite101.comand has freelanced for Disfunkshion Magazine, which is dedicated to empowering women with important stories about life, beauty, relationships and career. Monica enjoys writing long-form journalism and has also written blogs and calendar picks for OC Weekly.

As of now, Monica writes at every chance she gets. During her free time, Monica enjoys reading non-fiction pieces, mystery novels, and magazines such as Marie Claire and Seventeen. She spends most of her time typing away at quaint coffee shops and interacting with interesting community members and reading Twitter updates from her favorite author, Susan Orlean
