California Gov. Brown. Patch file photo.
Yeparoo May 20, 2013 at 12:42 pm
Got to give Gov. Brown credit for recognizing that the surplus is a "one off" situation.Read More I wouldn't be surprised if the planned budget will be smaller in FYI 14-15 than it is 13-14. The analysts that answered questions about why next year is anticipated to be lower were hilarious. Japan, workers working less hours, China, North Korea (seriously). It will be lower next year because companies and people were taking profits, accelerating dividend and cap gains and delaying deductions to avoid the 2013 FEDERAL tax increase. With his hands tied with Props 98/111 and needing to spend those funds on ED, CC does make some sense. I can't speak to the strategy and timing of how the the money is being spent. I would have preferred that districts been allowed to retire as much debt as possible to reduce cash flow to debt servicing, and increasing the amount of cash flow that could be spent on ED.

I am not aware that CTA must approve any curriculum implemented in CA. Please cite your source.Read More As for attacking teachers, please read your posts on just this one thread. Here's just one direct quote: "I don't see anything so radical in it that would require our already (presumed) expert teachers to need a billion dollars worth of training." As has been pointed out the billion dollars is targeted for EVERY part of implementation, not just teacher training. You really have trouble seeing past your dislike for teachers to see what this article is really saying. This is often the case.

fact checker, as you are certainly aware, CTA must approve any curriculum that is implemented in theRead More state of California. That being said, there is no requirement that this be done using categorical funds. This was done to direct money as CTA desired. It offers no benefit students in CUSD. LaAna, please be accurate. I don't attack teachers.

Good news for CUSD seems to be bad news for Dawn.
LeAna Bui May 14, 2013 at 06:02 pm
Dawn: From what I can see of what you post, you lay the root of all problems at the foot of CUSD'sRead More door. I do not. Short of spoon feeding this information to voters, how do you propose CUSD "educate" the public?? As Shelly noted, this has been an issued discussed in CUSD for YEARS. In my first one-on-one meeting Jim Fleming (in 1992! before kids!!), he pointed out this disparity then and referred me to the PTA people who were taking the lead then in case I was interested in lending my voice. In my PTA days, the representatives in Sacramento always commented the large and vocal contingent that visited Sacramento from 4th district. As parents and voters, we were trying and CUSD supported our efforts. At some point, voters must take some responsibility for their lack of knowledge and insight and quit pointing at others.

Dawn, This issue has been discussed in our district for years!!!!! I remember writing postcards toRead More Sacramento about this issue when my oldest son was in 1st grade! The budget discussions are open to the public. The board meeting agendas are open to the public. Is it always someone else's fault?

John Barnes doesn't care about anyone except himself. He only acts nice to you of he thinks you canRead More get him some D1A attention. Remember when he almost bailed on Los Al for Servite??? He only returned because the district ponied up more money. He's a phoney and a fraud. Stop worshipping this man and look up to your own father.

Coach Barnes is truly a role model and life changer. For those who have been fortunate enough toRead More play for him or mentored by him took away lessons that will be applied in life throughout everyday tasks and events. I was one of the fortunate ones who had the honor to be coached and mentored by coach Barnes and I will never be able to thank him enough. Til this day I still apply what I have learned and heard from coach to my everyday tasks and events like work and how I am as a person. Something so simple as doing cardio at the gym or running outside I still hear "run through the endzone" pushing me not to slow down or stop until I'm finished. This applies to work ethics also. Thank you coach Barnes for all that you have done for me and the rest of the Griffins.

Run Seal Beach is also a large contributor to this new facility and we are very pleased that ourRead More event could do so for such a worthy project. www.RunSealBeach.com

I had the honor of having "Madam Currie" as my chemistry teacher years ago. She is one ofRead More the best. To teach such a complex subject in such a simple way is a true gift given to so few.

"Every 15 Minutes" had a big impact on both of my kids who are students at Los Al. TheyRead More "lost" close friends, members of the choirs they are in, players on their sports teams, and student body leaders. This program did make a difference, and I hope it ultimately saves lives when our kids go out in the real world. One other thing....it's more than just a little bit ironic that this story on the Patch email I got was followed by a story about which Irish pub you can go to and celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

This event touches not only the students involved (those who died) and the other students (those whoRead More witness the accident and lose their friends every 15 minutes), but also the parents of the participants. It's a wonderful program that is run by the Youth Center of Los Alamitos. Please see http://www.theyouthcenter.org/every15minutes.htm for more information. If you have the wherewithal, please consider donating to this program that has a positive effect on so many.

One lone officer on campus will not likely "prevent" a shooting. But he or she may be ableRead More to stop one in progress and contain the damage. He or she may also be enough of a deterrent that a gunman may choose a different target venue. Columbine, Connetticut, Colorado movie theatre, Ft. Hood......all gun free zones. No resistance for crazy gunmen to consider. We defend our President with guns. We defend our Congressmen with guns. We defend our Governors with guns. We defend our celebrities with guns. We defend our sporting events with guns. We defend our jewelry stores with guns. We defend our banks with guns. We defend our borders with guns. We defend our courts with guns. We defend our children at our schools with..........a sign that reads "This is a gun free zone." and then we call someone with a gun if there's an emergency. As for who should be paying for it, I would really have no problem taking all that fiscal aid we send to Pakistan to fund officers at ALL of our schools.
enea ostrich February 21, 2013 at 03:22 pm
Who asked anyone that they WANT an officer on campus? No residents would pay for that just likeRead More they wouldn't pay for a teacher SINCE ITS ALREADY paid by the state since it's a necessity. The government has been hashing this out and I guess Los Al Council wants to ACT like they are the state reps instead of what they are - CITY COUNCIL. By the way, one long cop would not stop a madman...check out what happened to Reagan and you will see that several secret service were there---did it help him??? NO!! Paying 95 grand, go ahead...I wouldn't help pay for that NO!!!

Los Alamitos has a resident population of about 10,000. During the day we have an increase inRead More population based on 2/3 of the students at the HS and jrHS are from our neighbor cities. When someone comes into the City of Los Alamitos the police don't say "you don't live here so you will get less service from us." Yet for the most part their "spending" in the city doesn't come close to offsetting the costs that these additional people generate in service spending. In short, Los Al spends much more than they get in by providing services to these transients. The raw fact is that with just one of the LAUSD schools in Seal Beach, that community shares almost none of the service costs associated with the students that Rossmoor and Los Al bear. If we assume that each student bears a per head service cost to the city while attending school there, the cities bear costs in the order of Los Al, Rossmoor and then Seal Beach. While I agree that there could be loss of control by each city picking up their fair share of the service cost for the officer, it would seem that a proportional cost basis for the officer would be the "right" thing for each community to do rather than throwing the load unfairly onto Los Al. A $60.00 per student SRO fee collected by the district and paid under contract to Los Al would cover the costs and do it equitably.

I'm curious...Sandy Hook was an elementary school.....why is the High school getting the armed guardRead More ??
enea ostrich February 19, 2013 at 04:05 pm
Well why don't we just make a siege for all schools in this country and require everyone to have aRead More mental exam, a background check and an idea proving it all to boot? No way, ridiculous. Puh-lease have common sense. This is not NAZI Germany!
Vicki Ferguson February 19, 2013 at 12:32 pm
I don't understand why school supervision used to have classified workers, that actually got to knowRead More the children by name, by trouble makers , and by areas that kids went off to creat problems etc, were reduced in hours . All of a sudden it's uniformed officers @ $190,000 a year. I have seen same thing happen in Long Beach with up to 4 officers per high school. Extremely expensive. Bring back the classified workers before you do such an expensive change.

OMG, OMG, I just figured it out! It's so obvious! The incredibly thin-skinned bully JustUs isRead More actually the incredibly thin-skinned bully Sarah Palin! Welcome to the Patch Governor!

On a different blog he said "your nation" and "your detractors" when talkingRead More about the United States. Strange eh for a native American to say that eh, xxxxxxxxx?

Just BREATHE! It seems to me that, maybe they would like for you to just show a little moreRead More self-control and not be so defensive all the time (It only makes you look guilty).

The omission of Frederick Douglas is just a portion of the convenient oversights in this film. ToRead More get the real truth about Lincoln and slavery you must listen to noted historian Lerone Bennett. http://bit.ly/VgwcLN

As a parent, I would even help pay for protection. The Meritage Salon shooting could have been muchRead More worse. I feel that if the shooter was not caught by the police when he was, he would have driven over to McGaugh school to pick up his son. There were still lots of kids on campus at that time including my child. I thank the police for grabbing that monster when they did and so should the District. Who knows what that monster would have done at the school! We got lucky, District should open their eyes now and protect!!!!
MamaCL January 30, 2013 at 12:36 pm
Finally ! We show the same protection for our kids as our banks.
