We have kids trying to kill a guy with skateboards. He was not expected to survive. But becauseRead More they are kids we get no names? Killing someone should have some names. If not the kids, MAYBE, the parents???
xxxxxxxxx May 19, 2013 at 06:23 pm
How is it right to publish names along with the alleged crime? Wouldn't that be a "SecurityRead More Concern", as it states in the OCSD online arrest records... "Due to security concerns, we have discontinued posting detailed inmate information on this website. Information required to be disclosed under Government Code section 6254(f)(1) of the California Public Records..." Shouldn't the Rackauckas be in some kind of violation???

Ariel castro? That name seems familiar, like the kidnapper in ohio, should we just investigateRead More anyone named ariel castro just to be on the safe side :)

I feel it. We've had an unusually good May so far. Hope I didn't jinx it and now the May GrayRead More starts!!!

KEEP the FIRE PITS. They are a long-standing and cherished tradition in these beach towns along theRead More So Cal Coast. It's fine to regulate the months, dates and hours of use (e.g., Fri, Sat and Sun from 7 p.m. to midnight in the summer months), and the materials burned in the pits (only wood, not plastic or other toxic items). It's also fine to establish a system by which users must register or make a reservation and provide a credit card to cover costs of clean-up if they don't pick up afterward (similar to Crystal Cove State Park). As for the recent AQMD report detailing high levels of particulates, did anyone take into consideration all the particulates that are falling from the sky every day with the hundreds of commercial airplanes that take off from John Wayne and Long Beach Airports. These flights from John Wayne Airport take off hard-and-fast and fly directly over-head (right over the Back Bay, Balboa Island and the Peninsula). Try factoring that into your air quality tests. I bet you will find there are more pollutants and particulates in the air coming from those jets flying over-head than anything remotely close to the beach fire pits!!!! Jim M.

If the AQMD is worried about pollution I have a suggestion!!! This should amaze everyone as I doubtRead More you even recognize what is happening. Go look at your car. If it has been outside you will notice tiny specs of something that is not bird doo. It is usually a pale yellow depending. What you are looking at is oil or hydraulic fluid. Next question is where did it come from. Answer? Airplanes!!! Yes they leak, just like your car. Get the AQMD doing something useful! Leave the fire rings alone.

Most of the supporters of the ban are newcomers who have a high opinion of themselves now that theyRead More have "arrived" as beachfront property owners. The beach towns have suffered over the years from these social climbers who have no respect for the traditions of beach living or for the established beach community in general. Some of the elitist city councilmen fall with that category, that is why they will push through their agenda no matter how unpopular it is with the local citizens. They don't believe in democracy. All you commoners can forget about singing around the fire with your family and friends!

I grew up in Redondo Beach, CA. We, the surfers at least, all said 'there is no life east of PCHRead More (Pacific Coast Hwy) My sympathy for the people not so lucky.

There's nothing like coming home smelling like a bonfire, it's part of the tradition, propane justRead More doesn't sound like it could ever replace it.

Muzzle the AQMD with a catalytic converter on their oral cavity, they spread more B.S. than allRead More the cows and fire rings in California. Another ungoverned agency in our bureaucratic society that perpetuates its own self importance with imperceptive facts and fiction. They have driven more jobs out of California and we still have them spewing polluted air.
Gwynne Snee May 16, 2013 at 04:21 pm
Lets look out for our neighbors and community. Criminals won't have as much opportunity if theRead More believe there are good neighbors watching.

It would be nice if Rossmoor could replace it's aging rusted out street lights with better ones thatRead More are programable and use less energy. Or at least replace or add lights to the areas that are not well lighted and dangerous at night. These include around schools, parks, and the shopping center. The new modern solar street lights are energy free, but they are not cheap. http://image.made-in-china.com/2f0j00keTEBchthZrA/Solar-Road-Light.jpg
California Gov. Brown. Patch file photo.
Yeparoo May 20, 2013 at 12:42 pm
Got to give Gov. Brown credit for recognizing that the surplus is a "one off" situation.Read More I wouldn't be surprised if the planned budget will be smaller in FYI 14-15 than it is 13-14. The analysts that answered questions about why next year is anticipated to be lower were hilarious. Japan, workers working less hours, China, North Korea (seriously). It will be lower next year because companies and people were taking profits, accelerating dividend and cap gains and delaying deductions to avoid the 2013 FEDERAL tax increase. With his hands tied with Props 98/111 and needing to spend those funds on ED, CC does make some sense. I can't speak to the strategy and timing of how the the money is being spent. I would have preferred that districts been allowed to retire as much debt as possible to reduce cash flow to debt servicing, and increasing the amount of cash flow that could be spent on ED.

I am not aware that CTA must approve any curriculum implemented in CA. Please cite your source.Read More As for attacking teachers, please read your posts on just this one thread. Here's just one direct quote: "I don't see anything so radical in it that would require our already (presumed) expert teachers to need a billion dollars worth of training." As has been pointed out the billion dollars is targeted for EVERY part of implementation, not just teacher training. You really have trouble seeing past your dislike for teachers to see what this article is really saying. This is often the case.
Capo mom May 17, 2013 at 05:40 pm
fact checker, as you are certainly aware, CTA must approve any curriculum that is implemented in theRead More state of California. That being said, there is no requirement that this be done using categorical funds. This was done to direct money as CTA desired. It offers no benefit students in CUSD. LaAna, please be accurate. I don't attack teachers.

They should make standards for the type of wood that can be burnt, don't ban the fire pits. SomeRead More woods smell and give of more smoke than other woods. The cities could even sell the wood that could be burned and make some money off it. No plastic, trash, or painted/treated wood should be allowed to be burned. It is just that simple.

Please join us on May 17th at 5pm at Huntington Beach City Hall's Council Chambers for aRead More presentation and meeting held by the Southern California Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) to discuss the beach bonfire rings and rule 444. This is your chance to let your voice be heard by speaking directly with the SCQAMD Board Members at this public meeting.

Well, the loans are there, they just aren't liar loans anymore. There's been a shift back toRead More collateral-based lending and fundamental lending standards, e.g. the notion of a down payment requierement ("skin in the game") and "ability to pay rule" for borrowers. OMG What a novel concept! It's like Banking 101 for these jokers. I welcome it because I'm tired of using tax dollar to bail out HELOC abusers. Realtors need to make commission-paying hay while the sun shines though in 2013. Prices are high now because of low supply. Fannie and Freddie are introducing new QRM rules (qualified residential mortage) in 2014. Also coming our way in 2014: 1. Putting sacred cow on a diet - future reductions in Mortgage Interest Tax Deduction? $70 billion/yr. federal subsidy. 2. New Fed Chairman (Bernanke likely heading out the door).
CDC May 15, 2013 at 07:30 pm
And supply? Never been lower. And loans are nonexistent! Better have a pillowcase of money or yourRead More out of luck!
CDC May 15, 2013 at 06:55 pm
The high home prices are in regional bubbles. Houses in Rossmoor are way up from 6-9 mouths ago.Read More Average listing price now is 830,000 and 8 months ago it was 670,000. However, my friend's neighborhood home prices in Costa Mesa are dead flat and have gone up very little. A quick check of Zillow will show the real hot spots. And it is still a buyers market since the economy is supposed to go weak in a few months killing sales and price growth. And not many homes are selling for over a million anymore. Everyone wants old stock homes they can knockdown. And everyone is using cash only, which means ONLY the rich are buying now. So it really does not matter about supply if you can't get a loan. Right Friedrich.
RCSD honors the sheriff's deputies who handled the brutal attack of a Rossmoor jogger
The Beast ! May 15, 2013 at 09:58 am
Most communities what simply say the Deputies were just doing there job, and that what they signedRead More up to do.
Summum Bonum May 15, 2013 at 09:04 am
Great job to the deputies. I think the emphasis of the article should be what these deputies didRead More that was "above and beyond" their normal call of duty. Did they work extra hours unpaid, did they employ some new innovative techniques to apprehend the assailant, or what?
