The winner of a Golden Bell Award, Weaver Elementary is also a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence as well as a California Distinguished School. With the whale as its mascot, the school encompasses colorful sea-life murals throughout its campus. Erin Kominsky is the Weaver principal, and nearly 600 students attend the school. As with many schools in the district, students at Weaver vastly outpace the state average in standardized test scores. For example, in the 2008-09 school year, 97 percent of Weaver students tested demonstrated proficiency in math compared to the statewide average where only 46 percent of students demonstrated proficiency in math that year. All teachers at the school are trained in the "Cognitively Guided Instruction" approach to math. Programs at the school include music, art and an after-school program called Kids Korner.
