Los Alamitos Police Chief Todd Mattern has been leading the department since 2008 after serving nearly two decades with the force. The department has two divisions, including Support Services and Operations, which encompasses patrol, investigations and the reserve officers' program. The Los Amalitos Police Department is part of the West County SWAT team, a joint task force of officers from Cypress, Seal Beach, Fountain Valley and Westminster. The city of Los Alamitos has a relatively low crime rate, with property crimes vastly outnumbering serious crimes against people.
