Located at the base of the Seal Beach Pier, the Seal Beach Lifeguard Department operates year round to protect beachgoers along the city's two-mile stretch of beach and surfside. The department has five rescue units, a boat, one personal watercraft and seven lifeguard towers. There are three full-time lifeguards, who work year round and 40 seasonal lifeguards, who work during the summer months. The department is part of the California Surf Lifesaving Association and offers an annual junior lifeguard program. In addition to patrolling the beach, rescuing swimmers and treating injuries, Seal Beach lifeguards spend much of the summer season treating stingray victims because of the large population of stingrays in local waters. Each spring, potential lifeguards have the opportunity to try out for a lifeguard position through a series of swimming and running tests and interviews.
