Sports Shorts: Top-Seeded Griffins to Play in Gahr Tournament
Los Alamitos, the No. 1 team girls volleyball team in CIF Southern Section Division 1AA, meets Torrance in pool play Monday at 10 a.m. Esther Lee leads girls golf team to victory.
Los Alamitos’ girls volleyball team, No. 1 in the , begins play Monday in the 2011 Molten/Gahr Volleyball Classic at Gahr High in Cerritos.
The top-seeded Griffins open pool play against Torrance. Also in their pool is Anaheim Canyon, Flintridge Sacred Heart, Gahr, Mayfield, West Torrance and Cerritos Valley Christian. Competition begins at 10 a.m.
Pool play is also taking place between teams at Mayfair, where Huntington Beach opens against Sonora, Lakewood and St. Joseph high schools. The tournament continues Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and the championship match will be held 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 12, at Gahr.

The Griffins opened their season on Thursday with a 25-22, 25-17, 25-14 victory over visiting Long Beach Wilson. In the match, junior Jaylen Villanueva had 10 kills and 11 digs and sophomore Justine Wong-Orantes contributed 29 assists.

On Wednesday, in girls golf, Esther Lee shot a four-under-par 32 to lead Los Alamitos’ girls team to a 222-292 victory over Villa Park at Green River.
