Clear Skies and Large Crowds Expected at Race on the Base

Unlike in years past, the 31st Annual Race on The Base will have lots of sunshine for more than 6,000 athlete's and spectators this weekend.

After years of rain, a bright sun is finally expected to shine over the 6,000 athletes and spectators at the 31st Annual Los Alamitos Race on The Base Triathlon this Saturday.

“This year is special because it is a community event and it’s going to be good weather,” Recreation Manager and event organizer Emeline Moya said. “That’s huge because for the past four years I think it has rained. We are excited.”

Race for the Base will be held at the Joint Forces Training Base with the first 10K run/skate/wheel race of the day starting at 7:30 am. Other events will be two jr. reverse triathlons, 5K run and 5K walk, and two reverse triathlons. All proceeds will benefit the USA Water Polo National Aquatic Center at the Joint Forces Base. The 5k walk is co-hosted by the Cancer Support Foundation, and a portion of the proceeds generated is donated to the organization.

Sunshine isn’t the only new addition to this year’s race. Participants will receive a long-sleeved black technical shirt, newly designed finisher dog tag medals and a free breakfast or barbecue lunch from food sponsor Johnny Rebs’. Additionally, there will be an expanded vendor expo and local bands that will be playing throughout the day.

Registration is still open through the website until 2 pm Friday. Participants can also register in person Friday at Hangar 2 on the Base or Saturday morning before the first race.

“What makes me feel good about this event is that it helps people with their goals to get healthy,” Emeline said. “And its not just mom and dad, there’s something for kids to do. The Junior Triathlon feeds into the bigger triathlon. The kids start young, and that motivates them in the long-term for a healthy lifestyle.”
