New CIF-SS Football Rankings: Mission Viejo Still No. 2 in Pac-5

Voters don't count the Diablos' 35-7 loss to the nation's No. 1 team against them, but are not so kind to Bishop Amat. Corona del Mar moves up in Southwest Division.

(Ramsey, N.J.), the nation's No. 1 high school football team, did nothing to drop the Diablos (1-1) in the CIF Southern Section Pac-5 Division football rankings released Monday by the section office.

As well it shouldn't have. Gotta give coach Bob Johnson and his program points for scheduling such tough nonleague games. Next year, the Ironmen, who have won 36 games and five state titles in a row, will play at Mission Viejo.

San Clemente (2-0) and Santa Margarita (2-0) moved up a spot in the Pac-5 rankings, thanks partly to the and the in "Rumble at the Ranch, Part 2."

Clearing a spot for their advancement was No. 3 Bishop Amat (1-1), which lost to top-ranked Servite, 49-14, and fell to No. 7. Not sure why the voters didn't give the Lancers the same break they gave Mission Viejo. I think the Friars (2-0) might give Don Bosco Prep a run for its money, especially on a neutral field. West Coast prejudice? Maybe.

not only kept the Sea Kings undefeated at 2-0, but also moved them up in the Southern Division rankings (to No. 3 from No. 4), while their Pacific Coast League rivals each dropped one spot: Beckman (0-1) lost to Foothill, 14-10 and fell from No. 1, and Northwood (0-1) lost to Gahr, 24-22, and dropped from No. 3.

Los Amigos (2-0) jumped to No. 9 from being among the "others" after the Lobos' 24-21 victory over Godinez (0-1). But where's Laguna Beach? The Breakers opened their season Friday with a big 55-7 win over Webb of Claremont.

Tartans Don't Play, Move Up

St. Margaret's (0-1) had a bye this week and moved up one spot to No. 5 in the East Valley Division rankings, thanks to Bishop Diego's loss to Santa Ynez, 23-22, which dropped the Cardinals from Santa Barbara four spots to No. 8. Sage Hill (1-1) remained among the division's "others," .
