Pivotal Moment: The Griffins were up 14-0 in the first quarter, and with nine returning starters on defense they figured to be in good shape. But when Mike Hayden scored from 1 yard with 4:11 left in the opening quarter, the outcome was decided.

Quotable: Los Alamitos coach John Barnes told the Orange County Register: “We dropped a couple of touchdown passes. We had some pretty timely penalties. It seemed like every time we had a big play in the second half it was called back. … It gives us something to work on.”

Records: Los Alamitos (1-0), Paramount (0-1)

Notes: The victory was Barnes’ 300th at Los Alamitos. He surpassed 300 career victories last season because he coached his first year at Magnolia. He also coached for about three hours at Servite after the 2004 season, but that’s another story. … Wendell completed two touchdown passes to Dashawn Gordon in the first five minutes. They connected on a 32-yarder just 70 seconds into the contest, and a 23-yarder at the 7:06 mark. … Los Alamitos scored only once after the first quarter, when Kendall Brownlow scored from 19 yards with 1:45 left in the third quarter. Brownlow rushed for 97 yards. … The strength of the Griffins is the defense, which held Paramount to 121 yards of offense, including 63 passing. … Paramount is one of two nonleague opponents who had a winning record last season; the San Gabriel Valley League team was 8-3; after losing 29-26, the Pirates reeled off eight victories in a row. … Los Alamitos plays on the road next week against Covina Charter Oak (0-1), which was 10-2 a year ago.  It figures to be the most competitive game the Griffins will have before entering Sunset League play against Newport Harbor on Oct. 10.
