So Ends the SONGS...

Today, Southern California Edison notified the public that they had made the determination to shut down the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).  From the press release: “SONGS has served this region for over 40 years,” said Ted Craver, Chairman and CEO of Edison International, parent company of SCE, “but we have concluded that the continuing uncertainty about when or if SONGS might return to service was not good for our customers, our investors, or the need to plan for our region’s long-term electricity needs.”

As a member of the business community, while I may not wholly agree with the plant shut down, I am pleased that at least we know what our next steps will be as a whole.  Though there will be years of procedure to shut down the plant and many workers displaced by the shut down, perhaps this will elevate the discusssion to "what is next for power generation in our region?"

Now is the time for reasonable discussion, exploration of ideas and hopefully innovation.  SONGS' time may be over, but it is clear in Southern California that energy needs aren't doing anything but growing.  What do you think?
