They Serve

Leos may be little Lions, but their "Roar of Service" is just as loud.

Monday night I had the opportunity to attend a remarkable event, the Leos Annual Installation & Recognition reception.  You may or may not know, the LIONS International club here in Seal Beach is quite simply, a powerhouse of service.  As Past President of the Chamber of Commerce, and an active participant in many of the Lion's activities, I recognize the level of work the Lions put forth for our community and beyond.

The Leos are right there with them.  Fifteen years ago, the Leos became the youth segment of the Lions.  Having a year which runs from May 1st to April 30th, the 2010 - 2011 Leos just passe the torch and I had no idea of the work these young men and women do in the community.  They have contributed hundreds of hours to produce events, raise money and awareness for a variety of causes.  In addition, they gave away over $6,000 to groups such as the Police Explorer program, the Seal Beach Animal Care Center and Casa Youth Shelter.

For just over an hour, with the guidance of Scott Newton, Allyn Maddox and other Lions, who function as Leo advisors, the evening was a celebration of accomplishments both large and small.  There were Leos who handed out money, some who received scholarships and all were recognized for their contributions of time and talent.

Next time you see someone in a blue Leos shirt, thank them. They are the next generation engaged today in making our piece of the world just a bit better.
