School Board Roundup - Employee of the Year, Environmental Science, Hyperactive Behavior and the Model UN

A Roundup of Important votes and accommodations from the Los Alamitos Unified School District's recent board meeting.

  • The board also recognized Bill Ayres with the “Heroes of the Heart” award for 25 years of participation in the Run Seal Beach 5K, 10K.
  • Kathryn Marquez was honored as the employee of the year.
  • Russell Triplett, chair of the Citizen’s Bond Oversight Committee, provided a presentation regarding oversight of Measure K and said the audit that was released was “very clear and positive.” He said that 7 out of 10 projects are well under way and “in full swing.”
  • Representatives from Rachlin Architects provided updates on the modernization projects at McAuliffe and Los Alamitos Elementary schools. Both projects are reported as being on-time and on-budget. Board member Meg Cutuli said she is excited about the projects and thinks the red paint on the new buildings will look “gorgeous.”
  • The board unanimously decided to approve for Darlene Conforti to conduct a teacher survey with elementary and middle school teachers as partial fulfillment of her doctorate program through Walden University. The survey will help in determining which intervention is most used in the mainstream classroom to shape negative ADHD behaviors.
  • The board unanimously voted to approve an overnight/extended field trip by Los Alamitos High School students to Sacramento to attend the Model United Nations (MUN) Conference at UC Davis May 13-15. Students will miss one day of school. Costs will not exceed $380.00 and will be provided by student/parent donations. Four students will be accompanied by teacher, Melany Aiken.
  • The board unanimously voted to approve “Living in the Environment” textbook for the new AP Environmental Science class that was approved by the Board of Education on February 15.
  • The board unanimously voted to approve the use of the California Multiple Award Schedule (CMAS) Contract for some items associated with the districtwide wireless projects. Meg Cutuli said that “every kid will have an iPad pretty soon” and utilizing this technology in the classroom now will benefit the district tremendously.
