UPDATED: New Los Al Superintendent

Sherry Kropp is promoted from within by Los Alamitos Unified.

Sherry Kropp will be the next superintendent of the Los Alamitos Unified School District. At a closed-session meeting Monday, school board members unanimously chose her as the district's new head honcho.

Kropp, who has been assistant superintendent of educational services for six years, will take over July 1. She has worked for the district since 1985 in various capacities, including teacher and site administrator, according to a news release from the district. 

Board President Karen Russell said Kropp "has been integral to the district’s ongoing success, and we’re looking forward to working with her in this new role.”

Board member Jeffrey Barke called her "extraordinarily well-qualified." 

Kropp said she was thrilled to get the job. "I love this district," she said in a statement released by Los Alamitos Unified. “I am extremely honored to be the superintendent ... [and] I look forward to working with our exceptional board of education, teachers, staff, parents and community, providing the very best education for students.”

Kropp replaces Gregory Franklin, who that he would depart to take over the Tustin Unified School District. Kropp's total compensation package will run about $230,000 a year, Barke said. She received a four-year contract.

In related action, the school board elevated Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Patricia Meyer to deputy superintendent, the district said.
