New High School Principal Has a Lot To Live Up To

Dr. Brent Forsee takes the help at Laurel High School Today.

Students aren’t the only ones excited for their first day of school today. For Dr. Brent Forsee, the new school year offers an opportunity of a lifetime. Today, he takes the helm at Laurel High School as the new principal.

Forsee, who was hired as the new principal at Laurel High School, has taught regular education and special education. He has also worked as a counselor, coordinator for student services and assistant principal. But this year, he will be in charge.

Earning his undergraduate degree from Point Loma Nazarene University and his doctorate from University of Southern California — Forsee said he is ecstatic about the opportunity to join the Los Alamitos Unified School District.

“It is not very often a position like this in a district with such a wonderful reputation becomes available,” he said. “So to me, it seemed like a no-brainer, an opportunity of a lifetime.”

Laurel High School is a continuation high school providing an alternative education for students in the district. The student body consists of about 110 students in grades 11-13. And based on the 2008-2009 STAR test results, Laurel is one of the highest performing continuation schools in Orange County.

“Laurel has been on a path to success the last four years,” Forsee said. “I want to follow in the footsteps of some of the leaders that have come before me and continue that success.”

Superintendent Sherry Kropp said she was excited about the addition of Forsee and thinks he will be a great fit for Laurel.

“He has an outstanding background and we really are lucky to have him in our district,” she said.

His goal is simple: never stop learning.

“There are a lot of successful, professional, knowledgeable people in the district and I really want to learn from them,” he said. “I want to learn about the school, the students, what works and what doesn’t. I want to learn from those who came before me.”

Today is a day Forsee has been looking forward to for some time.

“I can’t wait for school to start,” he said. “I continue to be amazed at the quality of people and kids in the district. The quality of the district is amazing, this really is a dream job.”
