Cut From his NFL Team, Los Al Alum Chris Kluwe Is Lampooned in the Onion

The day after Los Alamitos High School grad Chris Kluwe was cut from the Minnesota Vikings, the Onion was there to make a joke.

The parody newspaper lampooned the outspoken Kluwe for his penchant for “passionate editorials” by pretending he’d made a similar editorial for “cut NFL punters.”

“Why should a cut punter be treated any differently than those players who are actually employed by a football team?” reads the Onion’s made-up quote for Kluwe, who for eight years served as the team’s punter. ”Just because these athletes have been told that their services are no longer needed doesn’t make them any less valuable to the squad than a starting QB."

Kluwe has spoken out about replacement refs and supporting Ray Guy's entry into the Football Hall of Fame, but he is perhaps most well-known for his defense of gay marriage, most notably in a letter to Maryland legislator Emmet C. Burns Jr. that garnered national attention.  

Kluwe, who is straight, also posed in Out magazine to support-same sex marriage.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, “Kluwe has become the most visible punter in NFL history because of his social activism.”

Kluwe considered he may be cut for his views and told the newspaper, “I think the sacrifice would be worth it.”  

The team’s general manager said Kluwe wasn’t cut for speaking out.
