Roughly 10 to 12 feet tall, the berm is designed to protect homes on the low-lying southeast side of the pier from winter flooding.

Demolitiongenerally takes about a week and a half to complete, Gallegos said in a written statement, and staff expects crews to finish before Easter weekend.

The contractor will stage equipment in the 10th Street beach parking lot, and on March 18, the city’s public works department will block off a portion of the parking lot to allow the contactors to prepare for work.

“East Beach will be closed during the removal of the berm for safety reasons,” Gallegos said in a written statement.
