Seal Beach Lifeguards to Hold Tryouts This Sunday

Orientation begins at 7:30 a.m. by the Seal Beach Pier.

Would-be life savers will hit the beach this Sunday as the Seal Beach Marine Safety Department holds its annual lifeguard tryouts.

Beginning on the northside of the pier, the event consists of a 1,000 yard swim and a run-swim-run — a combination of a 200-yard run, a 200-yard swim and another 200-yard run.

According to organizers, the pier swim will begin at 8:00 a.m. and according to Marine Safety Chief Joe Bailey, the best spectator location will be on the pier.

Seal Beach searchs for new Ocean Lifeguards every April, and Kevin Kinnear, a seasonal lifeguard who went through the process before, said the competition can get intense.

“Everybody’s fighting for a position,” Kinnear said. “You want to be the number one guy.”

Kinnear said they expect between 65 to 95 people to show up.

There will be an orientation at 7:30 a.m.

Minimum requirements for the position of Ocean Lifeguard:

  • Must be 18 years of age or a graduating high school senior. Anyone under 18 requires a parent's signature.
  • A valid California driver's license.
  • 20/40 vision, uncorrected.
  • A valid Social Security card.
  • Must be available for full-time employment (40 hours per week) for the entire summer.

The pier swim begins at 8 a.m. and the run-swim-run swim takes place at 8:45 a.m.  At about 10 a.m. organizers will post the results of the tryouts, and they’ll interview the top candidates on site.

Those chosen will enter the Seal Beach Marine Safety Training Academy and will be trained in first aid, CPR and ocean lifeguarding skills. According to organizers, the academy is a three-weekend course, and attendance is mandatory.

After students graduate from the academy, the department will tested them on the material and passing graduates may be hired as a lifeguard.
