Seal Beach Expected to Ban Pigs at Monday Council Meeting

Pigs of all size, kind or sex will be banned from Seal Beach if passed by the City Council.

The Seal Beach City Council on Monday night is expected to pass an ordinance banning all pigs within city limits "regardless of size, kind or sex."

According to a city staff report, language in the city's exiting municipal code currently bans the raising of hogs. The city subsequently found that the term "hog" only applies to pigs weighing more than 120 pounds and said the term is too narrow for effective code enforcement.

Currently, section 7.05.120 of the Seal Beach municipal code bans certain animals in the city and reads:

"No person shall keep any of the following animals: cattle; hogs; fowl; goats; horses; or mules."

The new ordinance, which will amend the municipal code, will ban all pigs of any size and will read:

"No person shall keep any of the following animals: cattle; hogs; fowl; goats; horses; mules; or pigs regardless of size, kind or sex."

The adoption of the new ordinance has been placed on the consent calendar for Monday's City Council meeting. Consent calendar items are considered routine items and can be passed with a single motion unless the item is pulled for further discussion by a council member
