The Seal Beach City Council has unanimously chosen Councilman Gary Miller — the mayor pro tem — as the new mayor.
The council, which took the action at its Monday meeting, also chose council member Ellery Deaton as mayor pro tem.
Unlike some cities -- like New York and Los Angeles -- the Seal Beach mayor is selected from the existing councilmembers by the existing councilmembers.
Miller replaces former Mayor Michael Levitt, who said of his colleagues: We didn’t always agree, but we always disagreed professionally.”
This is Miller's second term on the City Council and first as mayor. It is Deaton's first term on the council.
Miller says one of his goals is "maintaining a strong budget and stabilizing revenue sources.”
