Romney Defends Secretly Recorded Comments on Americans' Entitlement

While in Costa Mesa Monday, Romney defended his claim that half the nation has a victim mentality and is "dependent on government." Obama campaign calls the comments 'shocking' and 'disdainful.'

At a fundraiser in Orange County Monday, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney sought today to explain comments that were secretly recorded at a previous fundraiser where he described half the nation as “dependent on government, who believe that they are victims.''

Speaking at a hastily called news conference before a fundraiser at the Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa, Romney said his comments were ``not elegantly stated,'' saying he was ``speaking off the cuff in response to a question.''

"I'm sure I can state it more clearly, in a more effective way than I did in a setting like that,'' Romney said. ``I'm sure I'll point that out as time goes on.''

The video, said to be taken at a May 17 fundraiser at the Boca Raton, Fla. home of private equity manager Marc Leder, was released Monday on the website of the magazine Mother Jones.

In it Romney said, ``There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent on government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it. That's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them.''

Romney later said, ``my job is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.''

At the news conference, Romney said he hoped the person ``who has the
video would put out the full material,'' including the question and full
answer.

The Obama campaign quickly sought to capitalize on the video.

Campaign manager Jim Messina said it was ``shocking that a candidate for president of the United States would go behind closed doors and declare to a group of wealthy donors that half the American people view themselves as victims entitled to handouts and are unwilling to take personal responsibility for their lives.

``It's hard to serve as president for all Americans when you've disdainfully written off half the nation,'' Messina said.

The Obama campaign also sent out a fundraising email with the subject line, ``You won't believe this,'' with Messina saying Romney ``demonstrates such disgust and disdain for half of our fellow Americans.''

The fundraiser raised more than $3 million, KCAL9 reported. Tickets began at $1,000. Donors who gave $50,000 or raised $100,000 received two tickets to a private reception, two tickets to a photo reception, the opportunity to have their photo taken with Romney and four tickets to the general reception.

Does Romney have a point about American entitlement? Or are his comments disdainful of the people he seeks to represent?

Romney’s statement about 47% of the homes not paying any income tax is quite true. And probably 99% of that 47% are dependent on the government for many of their everyday need. And he is right, they will never vote anything but Democratic. I have had this argument over and over and always win it. The information is all over the interment though the liberal media types try to gloss over it and say that even those who don’t pay Federal income taxes at least pay Payroll Tax and say it like it is the same thing. While on Payroll tax the Democrats rammed through the “Payroll Tax Holliday” which sounds so wonderful on the surface until you realize that means the Feds are De-Funding Social Security by that same 2% that is not coming out of your payroll taxes. But don’t worry about it, since I am in the mortgage industry I know how they are making it up but don’t know how the Democrats got the Republicans to go along with the solution. HR3630 dictates that in 2011 every new loan will have an additional .10% added to the fee of every loan to help to fund social security and this number will continue to increase through 2013. It is actually much higher then that already, up to .80% in some case but I have never seen that talked about on TV, not even on Fox News. Kime Goodrum

Poor BoBo, Doesn't understand that the government borrowing $1.00 at 1% interest is a very low cost way to pump money into the system to create jobs. That the $1.00 you are paying 1% on will become $1.00 that you tax at 20% when it is earned which gives you a 19% gain in the value of that $1.00. This is HS econ Bobo. You borrow low and get your return high.

Mama You are sooo uninformed. Stopped job loss. Bank of America is laying off 16,000 employees. American Airlines 1,600. And the list goes on and on. The fact that the unemployment numbers are over 8% should tell you something, NO??

metoo Thanks for the refresher course in math. Now I know how to save the economy. More bailouts. The more bailouts the more money we make. Oh, but wait a minute. Isn't that why the U.S. credit rating was dropped?? It should follow then that the more stimulus money going out should give us a thriving economy. We have been giving bailouts since BUSH. Hello??? We have been giving stimulus sine BO. Hello???

Season's Greetings T'was the night before elections, And all thru' the town, Tempers were flaring Emotions ran up and down. I, in my bathrobe With a cat in my lap, Had shut off the TV, tired of political crap. When all of a sudden, There arose such a noise, I peered out my window, Saw Obama and his boys They had come for my wallet, They wanted my pay To hand out to others Who had not worked a day! He snatched up my money, And quick as a wink, Jumped back on his bandwagon As I gagged from the stink. He then rallied his henchmen Who were pulling his cart. I could tell they were out To tear my country apart! 'On Fannie, on Freddie, On Biden and Ayers! On Acorn, on Pelosi' He screamed at the pairs! They took off for his cause, And as they flew out of sight, I heard him laugh at a nation Who wouldn't stand up and fight! So I leave you to think on this one final note... IF YOU DON'T WANT SOCIALISM GET OUT AND VOTE !!!!

Thanks Bo Bo for updating my figure from 70% to 84% of LAUSD students receiving free breakfast, although it's more disturbing. Who in their right mind can believe 84% of the students qualify for free breakfast because of their household income. My housekeeper told me that when her daughter turns 3, she is home-free. She said the state will pay $1500 per month for daycare on top of her other benefits- food stamps and welfare. She insists on getting paid cash. She got pulled over one day by the cops and needed to borrow $300 to get her car out of impound. She doesn't have a driver's license. God knows whose car she is driving - registration, insurance?? Probably not. But that's OK because LA will no longer tow vehicles if you're illegal because it's too expensive for them. As a result, I now clean my own house. We shouldn't support these scams any longer.
Joker Joe September 24, 2012 at 03:15 PM
Dawn My pleasure on the update. You have to remember that California is a sanctuary state. That means illegals, once they get here, are free. Free, free from being bothered by taxes, insurance, licenses, etc. Our Hispanic population in Ca. is 51%. The state legislature is Democratic. There is no hope in stopping these scams even though Obama promised to Change things. 4 more years.... 4 more years... And California will be in bankruptcy. In Nov. you get to vote on increasing your sales tax because many illegals work under the table and pay no state taxes. It is continual sucking of money from the working class.

John The bailout to Bank of America a joke. They are eliminating 16,000 jobs by year end. The bailout money went into treasury bonds. They are not lending for housing at these low rates as they say the risk is not worth it. If you can get a loan you need a pristine credit rating and you pay big fees on top of it. The bailout to GM is funny. They are building a plant in China and still owe 16 billion for the bailout. Discontinued the Volt car production for a month. If no one was bailed out and they declared bankruptcy, like any business, TWA, United Airlines, etc. we might be on the road to recovery at this point.

Dawn Found this on the internet today. Students, parents, and teachers in a tiny Kansas school district have launched a revolt against new federal school lunch guidelines by producing a video parody that shows hungry children collapsing in classrooms and ends with students burning copies of the government regulations. Residents in Sharon Springs, Kan. say the regulations mandated by The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 have resulted in more hungry kids. And under the guidelines, teachers would be in violation of the law by giving hungry children an extra chicken tender. So, students and faculty members joined forced to produce the music video. And their message is simple – let Kansans run their own lunch rooms instead of bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. The video is performed to the tune of the song “We Are Young.” The lyrics read: “We are hungry. Set the policy on fire. It can burn brighter than the sun.” The video shows children collapsing from hunger during athletic events while others raid the school kitchen in search of food. Another student can be seen wearing a shirt that reads: “I love beef.”

Dan Avery, I think a lot of the elderly actually vote Democrat because they are always hearing from Democrats that Republicans will cut their Medicare or Social Security payments. I have many older relatives that vote this way. They come from a time when the Democratic party actually represented hardworking people and values. Unfortunately, now it just represents the wealthy elite of the Democratic Party very similar to the Republican Party. The Dems want all of the Lower Middle Class and Poor to be uneducated and dependent on the Government. If they keep them uneducated then they won't question their authority and will blindly vote for those who take care of them. I'm very saddened that Ron Paul and his ideals didn't catch on more with voters. Both parties are corrupt and regardless of who's elected our country is not going to be prospering anytime soon.
Joker Joe September 24, 2012 at 07:27 PM
OC mom Ron Paul was also my first choice. What does that tell you about the voters? 60 minutes last night interviewed Romney. He said his running mate is not running for the presidency and said he will keep Medicare the same BUT you did have the option of getting private health insurance with the same benefits and the government would pay for it. YOUR CHOICE. If I got the money I know I could work out a better deal because now there is competition. Just like if I had my social security money invested by me rather than the government borrowing it to cover their butts with other programs..
Frieda Wales September 24, 2012 at 09:07 PM

"they are always hearing from Democrats that Republicans will cut their Medicare or Social Security payments." Ryan/Romney plan for medicare: If you are under 55 you will get a voucher that you can use for purchasing a policy. That voucher will NOT be enough to provide the level of insurance that Medicare provides today. If this was such a good idea, why wait and not just make everyone do it now? Think of the competition Bobo! Social Security: Rather than fixing it ala Reagan/Greenspan, it should be privatized so that wall street bankers can collect fees on it. The progressive plan? Increase the cap on Social Security. Allow earlier retirement at reduced benefits so that more jobs open up for young people. Open up Medicare so anyone can buy into it, increasing the group size and lowering the age thus reducing the costs. "now it just represents the wealthy elite of the Democratic Party very similar to the Republican Party." Actually it represents corporations, just like the GOP. "I'm very saddened that Ron Paul and his ideals didn't catch on more with voters." Randian economic survival of the fittest is NOT a society. Investment into the Public Good always pays benefits (think NASA, DDE's highway system, etc.). Paul's philosophy says that the only good is the individual good, and that is the nadir of society not it's zenith. "Both parties are corrupt" We actually agree on this.

What will killing the Ambassador to Egypt and seal team members get you? NEW YORK (Reuters) – Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reassured Egypt’s new Islamist president on Monday that the United States would forge ahead with plans to expand economic assistance despite anti-American protests that cast new shadows over U.S. engagement with the region. Clinton met Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi in New York, where both are attending this week’s U.N. General Assembly meeting, and reinforced the Obama administration’s continued commitment to provide both military and economic aid for Cairo, a senior State Department official said.

"Romney can't do it until he is president. Obama will not do it. He is taking billions out of medicare to fund Obamacare." Romney won't be president. I mean he seriously thinks that the inability to open a jet aircraft in flight is a "problem". Anyone that stupid is really unelectable. Even Bush II wasn't stupid enough to say that (even though he seemed to be able to read My Pet Goat upside down). As for you Obama "is taking billions" line. Is that the same billions that Ryan said he would take in his plan? The same billions that were not cuts in services, but elimination of fraud and waste? The same billions that Ryan found and wanted out? Why YES IT IS! The only difference is that Ryan wanted to then use that money to give it to the wealthy 1% in tax cuts and Obama used it to provide health care coverage to 60+ million people. Isn't it sad that you keep on repeating a claim that shows that Obama did a "good thing" that even the Republican VP candidate wanted to do (reduce fraud and waste in Medicare), and then used it to actually help millions verses helping a thousand or so multi-millionairs.One would figure that even you die hard Faux News drones would have figured out that every time you bring this up and the actual facts come out that it makes you look like idiots for bringing it up and giving Obama credit for being wise enough to save that money and then put it to good use.

A fascist government is one where the citizens work and make a profit (money, etc.), and the government takes the money and distributes it to whomever, or whatever it decides. This tends to destroy any feelings of self-worth through work (invention, entrepreurship, etc.), and fosters a "why work hard, why try, why work?, when your efforts are enjoyed by flakes, illegals who now enjoy the fruits of YOUR labors, and your certainly do not receive the full amount of credit and profit from your own labors. How fascist has our country become in the past 3 1/2 years? WHo owns the car, financial, healthcare, educational industries, to name a few? Take an historical view, starting with the founding of our country and what it stood for until the very near past. Resist anger and hostility, look at the truth, and make your own changes for you and the future of this unique and wonderful country! MAke a choice - are you a freeloader, or do you want to try to make your own way? Do you wish for a government, like big daddy or pretty mama, to take care of you for the rest of your life -cradle to grave, with almost no effort on your part? HAve you ever thought of a great idea and turned that idea into something worthwhile - something you can be proud of? OR, are you so intrenched in the idea of free handouts, that you have become lazy and a taker?

Islamic leaders in Missouri and New Jersey are calling for lawmakers to limit free speech after an anti-Muslim film sparked outrage across the world. The Islamic Society of Greater Kansas City has launched a petition calling on Congress to “establish a law against insulting one’s religion.” FOLLOW TODD ON FACEBOOK FOR CULTURE WAR NEWS. CLICK HERE TO JOIN. “We understand the First Amendment (Amendment I) to the United States Constitution is part of the Bill of Rights and, as such, prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion, impeding the free exercise of religion, abridging the freedom of speech, infringing on the freedom of the press, etc., but when the allowance of “free” speech incites violence it should be banned,” read a statement from the Islamic Society. While condemning the violence that was originally blamed on the film, the Muslim group said ti would “be in everyone’s interest to ban such actions from reoccurring.” “We condemn the violence and feel that, in spite of the First Amendment of the U. S. Constitution, action may be necessary to pass such a bill or, at least, censure such actions in order to calm the current situation as well as prevent future re-occurrences,” the statement read. The Islamic Society in Kansas City is not alone in their calls for limiting free speech. “We, as Americans, have to put limits and borders [on[ freedom of speech,” Imam Mohammad Qatanani told The Blaze.
