About 50 swimmers tried out for a chance to become seasonal lifeguards in Seal Beach at the Marine Safety Department’s annual test Sunday.

The event included a 1,000-meter swim and a combination 200-meter run, 200-meter swim and 200-meter run.

According to department Lt. Chris Pierce, after the physical competition, organizers interviewed 27 of the applicants and invited 16 back to the academy in early May.

“It went really well,” Pierce said. “We had good conditions, not too windy. The water wasn’t too cold. We had a strong pool of people show up to take the test.”

“It’s fun every year to watch the new people,” added Pierce, who had said he went through his own tryouts in 1990.

The Seal Beach Marine Safety Training Academy will train applicants in first aid, CPR and ocean lifeguarding skills. According to organizers, the academy is a three-weekend course, and attendance is mandatory.

After students graduate from the academy, the department will test them on the material, and passing graduates may be hired as a lifeguard.
