UPDATE: Mark Your Calendar for 20-Hour 405 Freeway Closure in June
Crews will demolish parts of an old bridge connector between the 22 and the 405 Freeways. Expect delays.
EDITOR'S NOTE: OCTA officials have pushed the closure date back a week. The story has been changed to reflect that change.
Mark your calendars — a planned bridge demolition will shut down part of the 22 and 405 Freeways for 20-hours straight June 29-30.
Currently crews are reconstructing the southbound I-405 connector to the eastbound SR-22 freeway to make room for a new 22-405 carpool lane connector. Once workers complete the new connector, the old connector will be demolished, and that demolition includes part of Valley View Street Bridge.

- North 405 freeway at Valley View
- South 405 freeway at the I-605 freeway junction
- 7th St. / Eastbound SR-22 at the southbound I-405 freeway junction
“The southbound direction is what’s most impacted,” said Sarah King, an OCTA spokesperson. "We want to make sure that people can get where they need to be with minimal impacts. If we’re closing one of their routes on a regular basis … our goal is the make sure they know about it."
OCTA’s Recommended Detours
From the north 405, use one of the following:
- Exit Beach Blvd. turn right; Take WB SR-22 to reconnect with NB I-405
- Exit Westminster Ave. (EAST) turn left; Right on Bolsa Chica Rd.; Take WB SR-22 to NB I-405
- Exit Valley View St., left on Garden Grove Blvd.; Right on Valley View St.; Take WB SR-22 to NB I-405
From the south 405, use one of the following:
- Exit Studebaker Rd. turn right; Left on E. 2nd St. / Westminster Ave.; Continue on Westminster Ave. to access SB I-405
- Merge onto NB I-605; Exit Katella Ave. turn right; Right on Valley View St. to access SB I-405
From the south 605, use the following
- Exit Willow St. turn right; Left on Studebaker Rd.; Left on E. 2nd St. / Westminster Ave.; Continue on Westminster Ave. to access SB I-405
From the 7th St. /East 22 Freeway, use the following
- Merge onto NB I-605; Exit Katella Ave. turn right; Right on Valley View St. to access SB I-405
