Los Alamitos Post Office Told to Clean Up Its Act

Overgrown weeds at the Los Alamitos post office are earning the ire of residents and city officials.

Many Los Alamitos residents, along with city code enforcement, have noticed the weeds taking over the landscaping at the U.S. Post Office on Reagan Street in Los Alamitos.

The overgrowth, which actually blocks the post office signage, is not a harbinger of closures to come. Nor is the landscape budget a casualty of the federal budget sequester cuts.

It’s a staffing issue.

The post office custodian, “was injured and can not work,” explained Richard Maher, spokesman for the U.S. Post Office.

The government was scheduled to select a landscaping company to tidy up the property as of Friday, said Maher.

The work will be taken care of “just as soon as the company can schedule it,” Maher added.

That can’t come soon enough for city officials, who have been on the post office for more than a month to take care of the eyesore.

On June 19, the city was assured that the post office was selecting a contractor from among three bidders to get the job done, said Steven Mendoza, Los Alamitos community development director and public works director.

If the problem is not fixed promptly, the next step will be for the city to issue a notice of violation, added Mendoza.
