The Orange County Sanitation District Board of Directors is poised to consider a sewer rate hike for Los Alamitos and Seal Beach residents to be phased in over the next several years.

At Wednesday’s meeting in Fountain Valley, the board is expected to vote on an increase to sewer service charges by 4.8 percent this year and 2.4 percent each of the next four years in northwest and central Orange County. If approved, the changes would increase the annual fee for the average single family home by $14 in 2013 and about $8 each of the next four years. The 2013 fee of $294 would become $339 by 2017-18.

According to district staff, the move would help raise about $150 million needed for construction projects and ongoing maintenance costs.

Troy Edgar, district board chair and Los Alamitos councilman, said he’d done intense research on the proposed rate increase and called it a good financial decision.

“Everybody seems to be in agreement that the organization is very well run, Edgar said. “It’s a very good shepherd of its money. It is unfortunate, but these rates are required for us to maintain and our capital improvement projects.”

Edgar asked people to attend the Wednesday meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the boardroom at 10844 Ellis Avenue in Fountain Valley.

If approved, the item would go into effect thirty days afterward.

According to the agenda, during the hearing the clerk of the board “will count the protests and report the number of protest to the board of directors” and if "there is a majority protest, the Board will take no action and provide direction to staff.”

The District handles the waste of about 2.5 million in Orange County. Its coverage areas include Los Alamitos, Seal Beach, Rossmoor, Fountain Valley and Newport Beach.
