Former Los Al Mayor Leads Election Spending

Dean Grose has spent more than three times as much as next-highest-spending Los Alamitos City Council candidate Richard Murphy.

Former Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grose has spent about $10,300 so far in the race for city council, more than three times the amount spent by the next-highest-spending candidate, according to the latest filing data.

The other candidates running for two open council seats are current councilman Ken Stephens, realtor Demi Devaney and accountant Richard Murphy. 

Here's what they spent from July 1-Oct. 20:

  • Grose: $10,299.94
  • Murphy: $3,219 
  • Stephens: $2,593.37

Devaney filed a statement Oct. 22 saying she would neither take in nor spend more than $1,000 during the 2012 election race.

Stephens and Murphy are both financing their own campaigns with personal loans. Both candidates have taken no contributions.

Between July 1 and Oct. 20, Stephens loaned his campaign $16,500 and Murphy loaned his campaign $9,000.

During the same period, Grose raised $6,865 in donations and loaned $5,000 to his capaign.

As of Oct 20, Stephens has the highest ending cash balance with $2,356,63. Grose has $1,827.00 and Murphy has $2,240.

Because Mayor Pro Tem Marilynn Poe is retiring, Stephens is the only Los Al council member running for re-election this year.
