Crane Mishap On 22/605 Freeway Interchange Under Investigation

Caltrans is looking into a Tuesday incident, where a crane fell over and snarled traffic for hours.

An investigation is under way to find out why a crane toppled onto the 22/605 Freeway Interchange, transportation authorities said.

Starting at about 4:20 p.m. Tuesday, blocking the transition road from the eastbound Garden Grove Freeway to the northbound San Gabriel River Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol. No one was hurt in the mishap.

Caltrans, which is handling the investigation, has suspended all crane activities on the west segment of the West County Connector's project while the investigation is ongoing, according to a release from the Orange County Transportation Authority.

 “Any time that there’s an incident on a work site, you need to determine what happened, (and) see if there are any remedies that need to be made," said Joel Zlotnik, OCTA spokesman. “It is rare for something like this to happen, and that’s why it’s important to investigate, to determine what the cause was: to make sure that it doesn’t happen again."

Zlotnik added that he didn't know when the investigation would be completed or how long it would take.

According to an OCTA release, additional information on the accident will be released after the investigation is completed. Regularly scheduled night work will proceed as planned and a full schedule of the remaining closures this week can be found on the project website.
