Pro: Three blocks in Old Town will soon get new sewer pipes, water pipes and concrete in their alley.
Con: For six months, officials will close off parts of the alley for the construction.
Starting Monday, crews in Seal Beach will begin work on an alley that runs from Main Street to 6th Street in the three city blocks bordered by Central and Ocean avenues.
According to city staff, crews will complete the project one block at a time to minimize the impact on residents. Staff expects construction to take about two months per block.
Crews will start construction at the block bordered by Main and 8th Street on Monday. Later they’ll tackle 8th and 7th Street, followed by 7th and 6th Street.
Workers will install new sewer pipes, water pipes and new concrete in the alley. City officials urge residents to have some patience during the construction period.
“Your cooperation will be critical to the safe and successful completion of this project,” said Patrick Gallegos, the city's administrative manager, in a written statement. “This temporary inconvenience will provide years of quality utilities and a nicely concrete surfaced alley.”
While the alley undergoes construction, officials will block access to the alley for cars and pedestrians, including those with garage access to the alleys.
However, crews will only block off the alley of the block currently under construction, not the entire length of the alley through all three blocks.
Construction will not affect trash pickup, which will remain on schedule, according to city staff.
The city will provide free parking in the 8th Street beach parking lot to those immediately affected in that block. Staff will also issue two residential and one visitor parking permits per household for the period of construction. Residents can pick up permits at City Hall.
The construction crew, the Charles King Company, will start some minor construction work between Main and 8th beforehand, but the alley won't close before Monday.
