Wrong Way Driver Causes SigAlert Crash on 405 Freeway

A gray Mercedes SUV causes a two-car accident, according to the CHP.

A SigAlert was briefly in effect today when a driver headed the wrong way on the 405 Freeway caused a two-car crash, blocking all lanes except the carpool lane and fast lane, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The accident happened on the southbound 405 just south of MacArthur Boulevard at 12:15 p.m. Sunday. The SigAlert has been canceled, but crews are still working to clear the scene.

Paramedics were called to the scene, but authorities are unable to release details about the number of people injured. No one has been arrested at this point, said a CHP dispatcher.

The reports of a gray Mercedes SUV heading the wrong way on the freeway near Jamboree Road first came in at 11:55 a.m.

Hope you reported that to the police. I would imagine that would help their investigation of what happened.

Well at this point we don't even know if the driver was severely injured, or even killed in the crash, nor do we know the condition of those in the other vehicle. I hope they provide an update.

No one was killed which is pretty surprising. I don't know if it was a "he" in the Mercedes. I do know that the Mercedes came the wrong way down the southbound exit to Jamboree. I know this, because I wanted to exit there and had to swerve back on the freeway to avoid a head-on with the Mercedes. It’s pretty crazy how fast it all happened. Two seconds later and we would have been in a pretty nasty accident. At that time, everyone avoided the Mercedes and there wasn’t an accident. I ended up going back and entered the 405 on MacArthur. There was the accident. The accident was just past the MacArthur on-ramp. That is nearly a mile that the Mercedes drove the wrong way on the 405. When I say past, I mean to the wrong way driver. They passed the on-ramp, but didn’t make it under the MacArthur bridge. And somehow, the Mercedes only hit one other car that I know of. A Honda. It had the side curtain airbags out, but the lady in it was still alive and maybe okay. The driver of the Mercedes was in the back of a CHP car with paramedics checking on him/her. I couldn’t see the Mercedes driver. I only know about the Honda driver from overhearing the CHP.
