Special Olympics Torch Heads to Seal Beach

Torch expected to arrive between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Friday.

If you see a fast-moving fire surging through downtown Friday, think a second before you call the cops.

They may already be there.

The city police chief and Seal Beach Police Department staff will help carry the Special Olympics Southern California torch through city streets in an effort to raise money and awareness for the annual sporting event for people with special needs.

According to SBPD officials, SBPD Chief Joe Stilinovich will start the run with staffers and a Special Olympian when the torch arrives between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m at Pacific Coast Highway and Anderson Street.

The torch will pass through the city on its way to light the “Flame of Hope” at Cal State Long Beach, where the games are scheduled to begin Saturday.

The local route is about three miles: From Anderson Street, the procession will head along Pacific Coast Highway to 12th Street, down Ocean Avenue to Main Street, back up Main and then continue north PCH until they pass the torch to the California Highway Patrol at PCH and 1st.
