Police Kill Stalking Suspect in Seal Beach

An investigation is ongoing into the officer-involved shooting of a stalking and carjacking suspect at a Seal Beach gas station.

Police shot and killed a man suspected of stalking a woman and attempting to carjack a driver at a Seal Beach gas station following a car chase through Leisure World Saturday night.

The shooting capped an hour-long chase that started in Garden Grove when a woman called to report that her ex-boyfriend was stalking her in violation of a domestic violence restraining order said Lt. Jeff Nightengale, Garden Grove Police Department’s spokesman.

At about 4:30 p.m., police were called to the 5900 block of Huntley Avenue in Garden Grove. It was the third time in the last 24 hours police responded to reports of stalking at the home.

“Our officers were on scene talking to her when one of our officers picked up the vehicle the suspect was in, inside our city limits, and started a pursuit on Valley View,” Nightengale said.

A chase ensued, but the suspect escaped. Not long after, Seal Beach police began receiving reports of an erratic driver fitting the suspect’s description. Police from both departments began chasing the suspect, and a minor accident occurred during the pursuit, said Nightengale. Ultimately, the suspect ditched his car in the parking lot by the Hampton Inn at 2401 Westminster near the Boeing campus.

“Our officers were in a short foot pursuit. One of our officers from the City of Garden Grove was involved in that pursuit and came to this gas station where the suspect tried to carjack a vehicle inside the gas station pumping gas,” Nightengale added. “Our officer came upon the suspect and the victim and an officer-involved shooting occurred.”

The shots were fired at 5: 28 p.m. Nightengale would not say if the suspect was armed or if he threatened the officer, but he did confirm that a weapon was found at the scene.

“We are not going to speak to the specifics of what exactly led to the  shooting at this point,” he added.

The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital where he died, according to police.

“He went into Leisure World, and our units got involved in the chase as he tried evasion tactics,” Ahumada said.

Police have not yet released the name of the suspect nor have authorities said what he was wanted for.

The Seal Beach and Garden Grove police departments and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department will conduct investigations into the shooting, said Seal Beach Police Sgt. Raul Ahumada.
