Police Kill Stalking Suspect in Seal Beach

An investigation is ongoing into the officer-involved shooting of a stalking and carjacking suspect at a Seal Beach gas station.

Police shot and killed a man suspected of stalking a woman and attempting to carjack a driver at a Seal Beach gas station following a car chase through Leisure World Saturday night.

The shooting capped an hour-long chase that started in Garden Grove when a woman called to report that her ex-boyfriend was stalking her in violation of a domestic violence restraining order said Lt. Jeff Nightengale, Garden Grove Police Department’s spokesman.

At about 4:30 p.m., police were called to the 5900 block of Huntley Avenue in Garden Grove. It was the third time in the last 24 hours police responded to reports of stalking at the home.

“Our officers were on scene talking to her when one of our officers picked up the vehicle the suspect was in, inside our city limits, and started a pursuit on Valley View,” Nightengale said.

A chase ensued, but the suspect escaped. Not long after, Seal Beach police began receiving reports of an erratic driver fitting the suspect’s description. Police from both departments began chasing the suspect, and a minor accident occurred during the pursuit, said Nightengale. Ultimately, the suspect ditched his car in the parking lot by the Hampton Inn at 2401 Westminster near the Boeing campus.

“Our officers were in a short foot pursuit. One of our officers from the City of Garden Grove was involved in that pursuit and came to this gas station where the suspect tried to carjack a vehicle inside the gas station pumping gas,” Nightengale added. “Our officer came upon the suspect and the victim and an officer-involved shooting occurred.”

The shots were fired at 5: 28 p.m. Nightengale would not say if the suspect was armed or if he threatened the officer, but he did confirm that a weapon was found at the scene.

“We are not going to speak to the specifics of what exactly led to the  shooting at this point,” he added.

The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital where he died, according to police.

“He went into Leisure World, and our units got involved in the chase as he tried evasion tactics,” Ahumada said.

Police have not yet released the name of the suspect nor have authorities said what he was wanted for.

The Seal Beach and Garden Grove police departments and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department will conduct investigations into the shooting, said Seal Beach Police Sgt. Raul Ahumada.

We saw him flying down Lampson just before SB police started their pursuit. He was driving so fast nearly hit 3 cars went into the right turn lane at SBB then turned left running a red light and crossing 3 lanes of traffic with cars swerving left and right to miss him, smoke coming out of his car, then officers nearby picked up pursuit.

restraining orders are only as good as the people they are given too

he almost hit us head on as he turned into our lane driving the wrong way and then we saw all these cops turn the corner to pursue him with sirens blaring. we stopped and he started to slow down as if he was going to stop next to us but then he swerved and went by us. i got a good look at him as he went by and he def looked like he was trying to figure out an escape route. now to know he tried to carjack someone and that he may have been armed is even scarier. glad nobody else was killed/hurt because so many could have been.

These things are so sad. All he had to do was follow the restraining order. I fell so bad for the girlfriend/wife I hope she understands this was not her fault. Our prayers go out to his family.

A happy ending for all affected by this Domestic Abuser! Now if police would just shoot all of the men violating restraining orders, especially those with 3 violations within 24hrs, the world would be a much happier & safer place for women. Save taxpayer money with courts & restraining orders that DON'T WORK! Imagine if this guy made it back to that house for the 4th time in just over a 24hr period, she probably would have been the dead one & would end up just being another statistic; victim of domestic violence. If this guy had been arrested, even for attempted carjacking & reckless driving he may not even go to prison Or only serve less than 3yrs, instead of getting the immediate death sentence that he did. Bravo Garden Grove & Seal Beach PD, job well done keeping the Huntley woman safe & protecting the innocent & safe driving citizens of the area.

Emily: Your comments are entirely wrong and disgusting. How can someone's death be a happy ending? What about the cop who was forced to kill someone? Do you think he's happy about it? This is the real world, not TV. Most cops are not macho killers. They're decent family men/women who would much rather arrest the bad guys and put them in jail. Many cops who kill someone are plagued with guilt, even when the shooting is justified. Some get through it with counseling; others eventually must leave law enforcement altogether. How is this a happy ending? Your comment that all violators of restraining orders should be summarily executed by the police has no place in the United States of America. We are a country of laws and due process - read the Constitution, for God's sake. If you really want to live in a place where the cops can summarily execute felons, I suggest you move to Afghanistan and join the Taliban. You will fit in very well there!

I wish guns were never invented!!! That is a sissy weapon!! They didn't have guns in bible times!! They used bow n arrows and fought, made knives (which all these took skill) U have to be brave to fight! it's easy to just pick up a gun!! Gun's hurt innocent people!!! In this case I am hoping that the police did n fact see a weapon b4 shooting!!

They needed to see a weapon before shooting? Was not his car a weapon? He could have killed a dozen people on his selfish race through our community! Should the police have waited until he went to her place of work and shot her and all her coworkers? Open your eyes people.

Just in case Alan reads my posting: I believe that ALL men who are abusive to women, who stalk, harass or otherwise violate restraining orders & who demonstrate no respect for the law, those who don't care about driving all over town practically killing other innocent drivers, their children & their family & then who attempt to violently carjack another innocent person at a gas station Deserves a death sentence On The Spot. Or is the happy ending you're looking for the one which involves his stalking to be successful in the death of the woman OR the death of innocent drivers on our roads or the death of the innocent person just filling up their gas tank at the Chevron station. Is this the happy ending you would prefer? I don't see how moving to Afghanistan would help me, women are treated like crap over there & they sure can't own a gun. I love the Constitution, the 2nd amendment & the good ole' US of A. And yes, I think violent felons (especially, multiple count violent felons) should all summarily be executed, by firing squad.
jb December 03, 2012 at 05:04 PM
Emily, there is much more to the constitution than the second amendment. Maybe you should go back and read it.
Rob P December 03, 2012 at 07:43 PM
Really Susan, by your logic, I wish pencils were never invented also, they make me mispell a lot of words. GUNS DONT KILL PEOPLE, THE PERSON HOLDING THE GUN DOES. HELLO!
CJ Taylor December 04, 2012 at 02:20 AM
Ltr450 His wife is doing okay, the order is no good when neither party follows it, even when there are 2 children involved. I know the families involved and am deeply saddened from the loss of a great friend. everyone from our home town is mourning his loss.
CJ Taylor December 04, 2012 at 02:30 AM
Emily maybe you should know the actual facts of the story before you open your ill mannored brainless mind. I happen to be very close with all parties involved. And you are so clueless of the truth but then again your one of those that believe's what the corrupt system tells you. i bet if they said the sky was falling you would run and hide. My husband's best friend is now dead and his other best friend is mourning the loss of her HUSBAND the suspect in which you speak of. please out of RESPECT for her and there young children and there mourning families keep your mouth shut and STUPID comments to yourself.
CJ Taylor December 04, 2012 at 02:36 AM
I happen to be a survivor of such crime's I was pregnant with my son when the suspect you speck of saved my life and the life of my now 4 year old son. without this man I would have been just another statistic. So maybe you all should get your facts straight before you speak of things in which you know nothing about. And to all the innocent people that almost got injured by my friend (THE SUSPECT) we the friends and the family are truely sorry. This person was not in a good place and if you have ever been in a bad place you know what it's like. Everyone deals with life and lose differently. What he did was not good, but he paid for his mistakes by serving many years in the system. He truely was a good guy and a very loving and devoted daddy to his children.
greg mclean December 04, 2012 at 01:44 PM
Emily the perpetrator has a family that is mourning their lost of a son, brother, uncle, cousin that will effect them the rest of their lives. This was a foolish violent crime but I am sure the police wished it had ended another way being able to take the man into custody rather than having to shoot him. Death by shooting is not the answer to these kind of crimes and your comments are said in anger maybe not on the outside but deep within you but please remember there were others that loved him and dont forget young lady human nature being what it is anyone of us can do the most dispicable crimes given the right situation. I pray for God to comfort those morning his lost and support all means of protecting women from these sort of events but do not endorse death by police shooting at any given chanch thats just plain barbaric and the police would also agree.
Lil-Marty December 04, 2012 at 09:15 PM
