Two people escaped a Tuesday morning apartment fire that began in the kitchen and badly damaged the upstairs unit, and arson investigators are examining the scene, the Long Beach Fire Department reported.

The unit was one of four in the building but it appeared the only one burned. It suffered heavy damage from the blaze.

The three adults who lived in the apartment are being helped by the Red Cross. Arson Investigators are examining the scene as part of the investigation into the cause of the morning fire, officials said in a e-mailed statement
