Cyclist Escorted off the 405

Though illegal and dangerous, freeway pedaling happens frequently.

It’s a bad idea to ride a bicycle on the freeway.

Aside from being dangerous, it’s also illegal.

The California Highway Patrol pulled over an 18-year-old who pedaled along the shoulder of the San Diego (405) Freeway in Seal Beach Thursday afternoon.

“We got a lot of people calling it in,” said Officer Gabe Montoya. “Basically, you can’t enter the freeway as a pedestrian.”

While it may be common sense, it’s apparently not common knowledge.

“In Orange County, we probably get reports of it about three or four times a month,” Montoya said. “A lot of the time, it’s people who know they have to get somewhere, and the shortest distance is just one exit down the freeway.”

The cyclist apparently entered the freeway at Westminster Avenue and was escorted off by an officer at Seal Beach Boulevard.
