O.C. Logs Nearly 500 Holiday DUI Arrests

Statewide, six people died in alcohol-related crashes over the Christmas weekend, and hundreds have been arrested for allegedly driving drunk in Orange County over the holidays.

Six people were killed statewide on the freeways during the Christmas holiday weekend -- five more than last year.

In Orange County, 476 people were arrested for driving under the influence between Dec. 16 and Dec. 25. The crackdown on drunk driving in Orange County is part of the 38-agency holiday DUI deployment known as “Avoid the 38.”

So far this holiday season, no DUI related deaths have been reported in Orange County.

The CHP jailed 889 alleged drunken drivers statewide, compared with 658 last year.

In 2010, 443 DUI arrests occurred during the same 10-day time period in Orange County, and there was one fatality statewide.

Over the next several days of the campaign, DUI checkpoints will be conducted in Anaheim, Buena Park, Huntington Beach, Laguna Niguel and Westminster. Between now and Jan. 1, extra DUI saturation patrols will be deployed in most cities throughout the county.

Police encourage drivers to report drunk drivers by calling 9-1-1.
