City Council OKs DUI Checkpoint Grant

The $61, 534 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety will allow Seal Beach police to conduct eight sobriety checkpoints through September 2014.

Drivers in Seal Beach should think twice before getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.

Last week the Seal Beach City Council approved a $61,534 grant contract with the California Office of Traffic Safety. With the grant approved at Monday's City Council meeting, Seal Beach police will conduct eight sobriety checkpoints through Sept. 1, 2014.

Although the City enjoys a lower crime rate, the problem of Driving Under the Influence of drugs and/or alcohol continues to be a problem affecting all areas of the city," Seal Beach police Chief Joseph Stilinovich wrote in a staff report.

Statistics show the number of DUI arrests have increased over the last several years.

• 2012 -150 Drivers arrested for DUI
• 2011 -203 Drivers arrested for DUI
• 2010 -152 Drivers arrested for DUI
• 2009 -112 Drivers arrested for DUI
• 2008 -111 Drivers arrested for DUI
• 2007 -89 Drivers arrested for DUI
