UPDATE: Catalina Blaze 85% Contained

About 115 acres have been scorched, officials said.

On a clear day, you can see ... Catalina go up in smoke. A brush fire that broke out Monday afternoon behind the island's yacht club was 85 percent contained this morning.

The fire, which has scorched about 115 acres, created a plume of smoke visible from parts of the mainland Monday. Water-dropping helicopters, assisted by firefighters who arrived by barge, continued battling the blaze this morning, according to City News Service.

County fire Inspector Matt Levesque said the fire, which began at 2:46 p.m. Monday, came close to some outbuildings and other structures, but firefighters were able to keep the flames away and no injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
