Crash on Lampson Kills 21-Year-Old

Just before midnight Wednesday, a driver hits the center divider on Lampson Avenue at the Seal Beach and Garden Grove border.

Officials worked today to identify the driver of a white Ford Contour who died after striking a raised center median, a wooden power pole and a block wall in Garden Grove, police said.

The crash occurred at 11:50 p.m. Wednesday on Lampson Avenue and Manley Street, just south of the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Center, said Garden Grove police Investigator Jason Perkins.

The driver of the Contour had just turned east on Lampson from Manley, said Perkins. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, ``but speed appears to be a significant factor,'' he said. ``It is not known if drugs or alcohol were involved.''

The coroner's office was working to confirm the driver's identity and notify next of kin. ``He appears to be a 21-year-old Garden Grove resident,'' Perkins said.

The crash caused a loss of power to several homes, and Edison crews were on the scene this morning working to restore power and replace the downed pole, he said.

Anyone who witnessed the accident was urged to contact Perkins at (714) 741-5823.
