Update: Car Crushes Bus Stop, Man Injured

The 55-year-old victim was waiting for a bus at PCH and Seal Beach Boulevard.

UPDATE: As of 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, the victim's medical condition improved from critical to stable, according to the Seal Beach Police Department.

A 55-year-old man suffered critical injuries Monday when a driver crashed into the Seal Beach bus stop where he had been waiting, trapping him in the crushed bus shelter.

The accident happened just after 8:14 p.m. on Seal Beach Boulevard just north of Pacific Coast Highway, according to Seal Beach Police Sgt. Steve Bowles. Police received numerous 911 calls and rushed to the scene, where Orange County Fire Authority crews worked to free the man and treat him for multiple injuries. The man was rushed to a nearby trauma center. Police didn't release his name, pending the notification of his family, said Bowles.

“The driver of the vehicle is cooperating with the police investigation and was later released,” Bowles said in a written statement. “There is no indication that alcohol or drugs were involved.”

The Seal Beach Police Department is requesting the community’s assistance with this incident. Anyone with information or who witnessed the collision is asked to contact Traffic Investigator Brad Davis at 562-799–4100, ext. 1612.

Seal Beach Boulevard is awkward for bus drivers on both sides of the street. What I have seen time and time again is that the drivers who nail the turn (a good turn, that is) will go through with no repercussions at all. If they make the slightest wrong turn it can be deadly for anyone on the corners, including those that are in cars and turning themselves. I usually turn right on Seal Beach Boulevard and Westminster, which is kinda awkward and I always let the bus driver turn right first because literally they take up the street and will hit you if you are making that turn in the other lane next to them. It's sad that this poor man who was just sitting at a bus stop had to suffer for a bus making a turn, but like I said, buses either nail the turn (do good) or flop it (screw up). It's a catch 22 situation but I feel it can be prevented if the bus drivers take their time.

Enea: There's nothing in the article that says he was hit by a BUS. Only that he was hit by an unspecified vehicle while waiting at a bus stop. Do you have independent info that a bus was involved, or did you jump to an unsubstantiated conclusion?
