UPDATE: As of 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, the victim's medical condition improved from critical to stable, according to the Seal Beach Police Department.
A 55-year-old man suffered critical injuries Monday when a driver crashed into the Seal Beach bus stop where he had been waiting, trapping him in the crushed bus shelter.
The accident happened just after 8:14 p.m. on Seal Beach Boulevard just north of Pacific Coast Highway, according to Seal Beach Police Sgt. Steve Bowles. Police received numerous 911 calls and rushed to the scene, where Orange County Fire Authority crews worked to free the man and treat him for multiple injuries. The man was rushed to a nearby trauma center. Police didn't release his name, pending the notification of his family, said Bowles.
“The driver of the vehicle is cooperating with the police investigation and was later released,” Bowles said in a written statement. “There is no indication that alcohol or drugs were involved.”
The Seal Beach Police Department is requesting the community’s assistance with this incident. Anyone with information or who witnessed the collision is asked to contact Traffic Investigator Brad Davis at 562-799–4100, ext. 1612.
