Drink Tip of the Week: Old Fashioned

Master bartender Jason Schiffer gives a fresh twist on the Old Fashioned cocktail, 'America's Gift to the culinary world.'

This is the fifth video in a weekly series showcasing the art of cocktail mixing, courtesy of 320 Main restaurant owner and bartender, Jason Schiffer.

The first known definition of the word "cocktail" appeared in an 1806 edition of The Balance and Columbia Repository. An editor explained it as "a potent concoction of spirits, bitters, water and sugar"—the cornerstones for the Old Fashioned.

Two centuries later, bartenders such as 320 Main's Jason Schiffer remain loyal to the venerable drink, but variations abound. Schiffer uses bourbon for his spirit and tops the cocktail with citrus.

"It's about aromatics. Just like a glass of wine, you want to smell it first."

I swear the old fashioned is one of the most commonly screwed up drinks when I go out. For some twisted reason the bartenders want to add club soda to it so that it is a full glass.

Mother's in the kitchen washing out the jugs,
Sister's in the pantry bottling the suds, Father's in the cellar mixing up the hops, Johnny's on the front porch watching for the cops. -Old time Prohibition song

Funny song. I think this weekend is the season premiere of HBO's prohibition era show, "Boardwalk Empire." The Old Fashioned could be a good watch party drink.

It makes me want to dust off the tiki bar to toast the Fall.

That was entertainment;not just a drink. That's what I love about yesteryear:) Something always good was stirring and a LOT was happening. People didn't mind waiting for their drink and when it came they sipped it slowly, for that was the whole point. My husband and I have tried all the other bars in Seal Beach--now it's time to try 320 Main!

This man has a rare quality, courage. Unlike the fool in office and his minions. If you thinkRead More the Constitution is a joke, you see him as bad. If you want to be spied on by your own government, Snowden is bad. Courage is missing in the states. The military have it but not the majority of our mediocre citizens.
