Education cost money, but then so does ignorance.

The start of the school year is much closer than any of us realize, or in my case, want to realize. This past week I had some free time so I did my back to school supply shopping. I usually buy my supplies from the school’s foundation, but this year I didn’t turn in the form in time, so I had to battle the crowds at the stores. I got my list from the school website and decided to do a little cost comparison between WalMart and . Here’s what I found.
Total cost for school-requested supplies for first and fourth grade came to $63.26 at WalMart and $75.57 at . I used my RedCard at Target and brought my total down to $71.79. WalMart ended up being $8.53 cheaper than with my RedCard. I found that the prices for many things like crayons and markers were exactly the same. Scissors, wipes and hand sanitizer were all slightly cheaper at WalMart. It all adds up.
Don’t forget. Buying schools supplies for your child’s classroom is considered a donation and therefore you should be able to deduct them on your 2011 taxes.
