Naval Weapons Station to Honor Subs Destroyed in WWII

This Memorial Day, the Navy will remember the WWII submarines and crews who gave their lives in the line of duty at the Submarine Memorial in Seal Beach.

By John Crandall

It’s a day to honor the fallen soldiers, the living warriors and those who made it through hell unscathed.

Navy officials will hold Memorial Day services May 27 at the United States National Submarine Memorial West May.

Located at the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station, the 11 a.m. event will include a “tolling the boats” ceremony: As a bell is rung, the name of each of the 52 U.S. submarines lost in World War II and the fate of the crew will be read aloud.

Capt. Thomas Ishee, commodore of San Diego-based Submarine Squadron 11, will give the keynote speech.

The event is free and open to the public. No reservations are required.

The Los Angeles Area "Diesel Boaters" Chapter of the U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II and the Los Angeles-Pasadena Base of the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. will host the event at 800 Seal Beach Boulevard.

For more information, contact Gregg Smith, station public affairs officer at (562) 626-7215.  For more information on the National Submarine Memorial site is also available online.
