Seal Beach Man Competes on Treasure Hunting Reality Show

A 52-year-old Seal Beach man will be one of the contestants on the History Channel's new show about competitive treasure hunting.

It shouldn’t be surprising that Seal Beach, where alley scavenging is competitive sport, would spawn a man whose passion for finding value in discarded things has landed him on a new reality show devoted to competitive treasure hunting.

As The Orange County Register reports, Seal Beach’s Barry Johnson is a contestant on the History Channel’s new series “Picked Off.”

His passion for treasure hunting goes all the way back to his childhood a paper route gave him great opportunities for trash digging, he told the paper.

According to the Register, Johnson, 52, said, "This is bad, I guess, but I’d be going down the road throwing my newspapers in the morning and going through their trash at the same time. I’d get an old bike out of the trash and walk it home.”
