Wildlife Refuge Looking for Plant Restoration Volunteers Saturday

The Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge needs volunteers to help restore native plants inside the refuge.

As part of National Public Lands Day, the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge will play host to a plant restoration event on Saturday.

The event, which will be held in conjunction with Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach and the Friends of the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge, is currently seeking volunteers to sign up to help by Wednesday.

According to the event's Facebook page, volunteers will help restore a three-acre area of the refuge with native flowers, shrubs and grasses.

"This is an area that is being choked out by invasive fennel, thistle, and mustard," event organizers wrote on the page. "This work will create much-needed transitional habitat for native birds, reptiles, mammals and pollinating insects."

Because the work will take place on the restricted naval base, volunteers must make mandatory reservations to attend the event by Wednesday, Nov. 20. Reservations can be made by calling the refuge office at 562-598-1024.

Volunteer work will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday and should be completed by noon, organizers said.
