Trick or Treat? Candy season & your health

Its Halloween season again! Halloween is popular for two things: costumes and candy. Dressing up is always fun, however, indulging on candy is better! If you are anything like me, then you love eating candy but if you are trying to lose weight then Halloween season is torture. Eating candy is not the healthiest of snacks.

Candy is a type of carbohydrate because it is a type of sucrose which is a type of disaccharide. A disaccharide is a type of carbohydrate that is known as a double sugar because they are made by bonding two single sugars together. Most candy is made from sucrose which is composed of glucose and fructose, two single sugars bonded together.

So why is candy not a healthy snack to indulge on? Sugar promotes obesity because it creates high insulin levels. High insulin levels in the body cause the excess sugar from candy to be stored as fat. If you are trying to lose weight, lean out, or not gain fat then indulging on candy is not the wisest decision during the Halloween season. So what do you do if you love candy like most? You moderate your sweet intake rather than completely cutting sweets out.

Halloween season can be torture when we are surrounded with sweets and are trying to be healthy. However, it is not the end of the world. Eating sweets is still possible on a healthy diet. Moderation is the key for sweets on a healthy diet. Don’t cut out sweets completely this Halloween season because it might just make you want them more. Be responsible, dress up, have fun, and eat sweets in
moderation! - Victor Carillo
