In the February Cold

Most non-Californian residents say that we are spoiled with our weather. Well, this may be true, but as a girl born and raised in beautiful Southern California, 50 degrees is almost unbearable for me.

For people whose only option is to work out at 5:30am, how do you get up in the morning? When I see that it is still dark outside and I am cuddled up warm in bed, what motivates me to get up and head out for a run, a CrossFit workout, or perhaps even a swim in an outdoor (supposedly heated) pool?

Cold weather discourages even the most motivated exercisers. For even the most motivated of exercisers, the cold weather can send people packing up their Nike’s until March or April. Here are some tips for staying motivated, fit, and warm while working out in these 'cold' California months.

1.     Be aware of your limits. People that live in Michigan may be able to go out in the snow to run 13.1 miles and be just fine, but in California, we are not accustomed to cold weather.  Listen to your body and be aware of how you are feeling. Some days, an indoor workout will be best.

2.     Dress in layers that you can remove and replace as needed. As your body warms up, you will need to take layers off.  As you start to sweat, you will need to add layers on.

3.     Protect your hands, feet, and ears. As you exercise, blood flow is concentrated in the trunk of your body and away from your extremities. Thicker socks and a thin pair of gloves will help your circulation.

4.     Wear reflective clothing when running or walking in the dark! Most drivers are not expecting for you to be out in the cold morning, so make sure they can see you!
