U.S. Women's Water Polo Team Edges Out Canada

The American team, which practices in Los Alamitos, will face China today in a semifinal.

The U.S. women's national water polo team -- which practices in Los Alamitos -- defeated Canada, 6-5, Tuesday in a FINA World League Super Finals quarterfinal in Beijing, as Jillian Kraus scored the tie-breaking goal with six minutes, 55 seconds to play.

Kelly Rulon scored an insurance goal with 2:14 to play, giving the U.S. a 6-4 lead. Monika Eggens scored for Canada with 1:43 left, but the Canadians were unable to score the equalizer.

The U.S. led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter on goals by Courtney Mathewson (Anaheim Hills) and Kelly Rulon. After a scoreless second quarter, Lolo Silver (Long Beach) scored three minutes into the third quarter.

Canada tied the score on back-to-back goals by Katrina Monton and Eggens.

The U.S. regained the lead on Kami Craig's goal with 1:21 left in the quarter, but Canada re-tied the score 17 seconds later on a goal by Carmen Eggens, Monika Eggens' sister.

The U.S. will face China today in a semifinal.
