Sugar Beet Festival, 5k Obstacle Course to Hit Los Al Saturday

Organizers aim to raise money for local nonprofits, celebrate local history and highlight nearby businesses, restaurants and community groups.

It's the event to beet.

After months of preparation, the Los Alamitos Sugar Beet Festival and Sugar Town Challenge will sprout Saturday.

The brainchild of local historian Larry Strawther and local businesswoman and school board member Diana Hill, the festival aims to raise money for local nonprofits, celebrate local history and highlight nearby businesses, restaurants and community groups.

The event, located near Pine Street and Florista Street, will feature a number of activities, including

  • Food and beverages from local restaurants
  • Historical exhibits
  • Live entertainment
  • Themed mini-expos for local health, education, sports, business and military organizations.
  • Competitions in which local nonprofits can win money.
  • A “5k-ish” obstacle run through the streets and alleys of Old Town, Los Alamitos. The course will include ropes, ramps, ladders, tires, walls and Walking Dead wannabe’s. 

The 5k and parts of the festival will begin at 9 a.m. and the opening ceremonies will take place at 11 a.m. The festival will start winding down at about 5 p.m., but St. Isidore Historic Plaza, which will host musical acts throughout the event, will remain open until at least 7:30 p.m., when the last band is scheduled to take the stage.

“They're going to have a fun time,” Strawther said. “I think it'll be great to see all the local communities working together.”
