Update: Storm Moves In, Heavy Rain, Flash Floods Expected

Thunderstorms, heavy rain and intense gusts pounded the region Friday and the cold storm will continue will continue to bring rain and chance of flooding throughout Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

Throughout the weekend, the storm is expected to drop 1.5-3.5 inches of rain in coastal areas of Orange County, and 3-6 inches in the foothills and mountains, with the greatest chance of thunderstorms on today, the National Weather Service reported.

Rainfall rates could reach an inch an hour, enough to cause flash flooding. Significant urban flooding is "likely'' across much of the Southland, according to the weather service.

As of early Saturday morning, the flood-prone areas of Seal Beach were not experiencing flooding. 

In Los Alamitos, Rossmoor and Seal Beach the Saturday temperature is expected to reach a high of 57 and an overnight low of 45.

Meanwhile, heavy snow and strong winds are predicted for the mountains, with a winter storm warning in effect through 8 a.m. Sunday.

Snow accumulations of 1-2 feet are possible at elevations above 5,500 feet, and a half-foot to a foot between 4,000 and 5,000 feet. Local totals over 3 feet are possible at the highest elevations.

Steady rain and snow will develop this afternoon, then continue heavy at times through late tonight. 

Southeast to south winds will increase to 25-40 mph this afternoon with gusts to 60 mph, then continue overnight before shifting to the southwest and weakening. Blowing snow will cause near-zero visibility at times in the mountains.

A gale warning is also in effect over coastal waters, and more rain is in the forecast for next week.
